Why won't my hair grow... or is it just breaking off??

P1320307.jpg

In the midst of a dry and cold winter season, having a lack of moisture in your hair is essentially inevitable. In our previous blog, we talked about some of our favorite Aveda products to help keep moisture locked in during the winter days. Today, we are going to dive into preventing breakage and some common ways hair breakage occurs, but few of these we are aware of.

Brushing

Did you know the way you brush you hair, and what you choose to brush it with, is one of the most common ways to cause stress and breakage to your hair? Remembering to be gentle with your hair by not ripping through it with a fine-toothed comb will take your hair a long way. Our favorite is the WetBrush or the AVEDA Wooden Paddle Brush. Work your hair gently and slowly through your tangled hair after a shower. Start at the ends and work up. If you have just stepped out of the shower, towel dry your hair as much as you can before setting out to smooth it. Using a prep products is KEY! Think of this predict as the foundation on your face… its crucial to set your makeup routine on the right track. Same thing with a prep product. Apply this product while hair while is damp can help with combing, and prevent further split ends and breakage.

(Some of our favorite are Speed of Light, Smooth Infusion Style Prep, Be Curly Style Prep, Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair and Color Conserve Daily Color Protect)

Ponytails

We know, it’s one of the favorite, and sometimes mandatory ways to get your hair out of the way. Especially with scarves, hoods and coats, throwing your hair in a ponytail or the infamous top bun, is a cute and simple solution. However, this repetitive habit is notorious for causing damage. Repeated pressure on the areas where that top bun sits will wear down the strength of the hair, often resulting in broken hair and split ends. This doesn’t even cover the damage that occurs when you remove the ponytail, you know, the yanking and pulling. Be gentle with this process, you will be surprised at how it effects your hair integrity.

Headbands

Again, we know the headbands and slicked back clean buns are classic and timeless, but you may be surprised at what you’re doing to your hairline. Pushing headbands on, even the elastic cloth ones, causes stress on your hairline. The hair around the perimeter is a lot more fragile than other areas where your hair grows. As a result, it doesn’t take much stress and strain to break those hairs. Making sure to be careful and gentle in this process will ensure better health for your hair.

Body Waxing vs. Shaving

Screen Shot 2019-02-14 at 8.05.32 AM.png

Why your Esthetician always tells you don’t shave…

Shaving is a rather inefficient method of removing unwanted hair from the body. Depending on how fast your hair grows, you could end up shaving daily just to keep up with the growth.

1. One of the main reasons we encourage our clients to not shave is the fact that you are working with sharp razor blades and nicks are not uncommon. With shaving, you run the risk of infection if you cut yourself. If you use your blades several times, it can increase the risk of inflammation and harmful bacteria.
2. Since wax pulls the hair out by the root, it takes much longer for it to grow back. A big advantage of waxing is that hair comes back thinner and lighter than it does with shaving.
3. Your first time waxing can be painful, but you will find that if you keep it up, it will gradually be less painful.
4. Waxing will leave the area smooth because the entire hair is pulled out. There will be no more stubble immediately after like in the case of shaving.
5. If you have sensitive skin, shaving will usually cause more problems.
6. Repeated waxing will slow hair growth. Even if you never get to the point where your hair stops growing altogether, you can expect to wax less often the longer you stick with it.
7. Shaving is likely to cause ingrown hair which can form painful infections. Waxing, however, removes the entire hair shaft, right down to the root. The new hair is thinner and tapered at the end, which means it is less likely to get trapped under the top layer of the skin.

2019 Twelve27 Gives Back

Happy February!

We’re not sure about you, but life hasn’t seemed to have slowed down much since the holidays ended a few short weeks ago.

We’ve survived a polar vortex and a government shutdown, celebrated new additions to our team and have made some incredibly exciting plans for 2019!

And as we lay out plans, set goals, and revisit our vision for Twelve27 Salon, our hearts raced when we came around to discussing our favorite part of owning a company - having the ability to give back. We opened Twelve27 for many incredible reasons, but one of the best is that with this larger platform, we have the opportunity to enact change and raise awareness for causes close to home. We love involving our team, and inspiring and educating our guests on how they can be actively involved in the community and partners for change.

We’re firm believers in you get what you give. By focusing on a single organization for an entire year, we believe we can have a greater impact than shifting from charity to charity, event to event. In 2018, we chose SisterFriend Organization, a menstrual equity non-profit based right here in Pittsburgh, PA. Over the last year we were able to raise almost $2,000 toward their non-profit and hopefully raise awareness about their crucial role in our society.

For 2019, we have chosen to partner with Pittsburgh-based HEARTH who’s mission is “To provide a range of supportive services and housing that empowers homeless families, who are survivors of domestic violence or other trauma to become independent, self-sufficient, and adequately housed; to foster low income housing opportunities to prevent homelessness and encourage safe, affordable housing.”

The vision they operate under is to give a “hand up,” not a hand out so the transitional program they have in place has lasting effects on the participants and by extension, the community.

Their program can be understand “to serve and empower families who are in need of transitional housing as a result of homelessness and domestic violence and who are committed to work toward self-sufficiency.”

What does that mean for you?!

On the first Saturday of every month, Twelve27 Salon will be donating 10% of all service totals to HEARTH. We will be hosting a party (a boozy one, duh) with a mimosa bar, margaritas, old fashioneds and fun rotating seasonal cocktails which are all given gladly to our Saturday guests with the hope of abundant donations to this amazing charity as well! You can give at any time, Venmo, cash, or on your credit card.

Keep an eye out for some fun events over the spring and summer!

Winter Hair Care with Aveda

Screen Shot 2019-02-07 at 8.08.56 AM.png

1. Buy a humidifier.  As we get deeper and deeper into winter your hair, like your skin, can become dry and brittle, especially when the heat is on at full blast. It’s important to always think about adding moisture back into the hair and this is a simple and easy first step.

2. Wash on Cold and Don’t Over Dry. After you condition (or deep condition) your hair in the shower, turn the faucet to cold and finish with a cold water rinse. This will quickly seal the cuticle and help your strands retain their moisture. And, instead of blasting your hair with high heat, spend an extra ten minutes and dry your hair on the low-medium setting. Together these steps will prolong your hair’s suppleness and shine.

3. Condition. Condition. Condition. Especially in the winter, it’s important to condition – that means daily conditioning, weekly deep conditioning and let’s not forget a daily application of a light weight leave-in conditioners. Allen recommends Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair or Color Conserve Daily Color Protect. Just a coin-sized amount will protect your hair from all sorts of winter woes ranging from excessive heat styling to an unexpected snowfall.

4. Your Washcloth Is Your New Best Friend. Before leaving the house, spray Brilliant Spray On Shine onto a dry wash cloth and gently run over your hair in sections from roots to ends. Voila! The Vitamin E in Aveda’s Brilliant Spray On Shine is a powerful anti-oxidant which helps protect hair against environmental aggressors. This will keep your hair static free and looking fresh throughout the day.

5. Add on Treatment at your next appointment.  Spending the extra minutes in the shower to condition is the best… but even better would be adding a professional AVEDA treatment onto your next cut or color appointment at Twelve27. For an extra $20 and 15 minutes of your time we can drench those locks with moisture and scalp massage to promote healthy hair through the every changing Pittsburgh weather.

Winter Body Waxing Tips

Screen Shot 2018-08-06 at 3.45.45 PM.png

Many people feel that body waxing is only necessary during the hot summer months. However this couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s actually better to start  waxing now rather than wait for warmer weather. While it may not be bathing suit season, and your body isn’t as visible to others, there are a variety of benefits to year-round body waxing:

Reduced Hair Growth

The #1 goal for most people who wax is to eliminate or substantially reduce hair growth on certain areas of their body. Body waxing removes hair at the root, which not only discourages future follicle growth, but damages its ability to grow back. By continuing to wax during the winter, you provide yourself with a chance to eliminate those course stubborn hairs before summer.

Healthier Skin

In the winter, the dry, heated air causes our skin to become tight, dry and flaky. Body waxing helps to exfoliate dead skin cells while encouraging new skin growth at the cellular level. It also helps to increase blood circulation to the surface of the skin. Combined, these benefits help to soften and moisturize your skin, leaving it healthy and beautiful.

Less Pain!

It’s no secret that body waxing isn’t the most comfortable hair removal option. However, when you avoid or go long periods without waxing it can be more painful. The more often you wax, the less painful it will be. Every time you body wax, you weaken the roots of your hair. The hair then grows in finer and thinner making it easier to remove. Over time, body waxing will become relatively pain-free when you have it done consistently.

You Feel Better

Body waxing provides you with sexy-smooth skin. Without unwanted stubble, you just feel better. It boosts your self-confidence, and makes you feel more comfortable. There is no reason to deprive yourself of this when you are covered up during the winter. Enjoy feeling good all year long and keep up your body waxing routine!

Grateful...again

IMG_5345.JPG

I know I'm going to sound like a broken record, but I have to write a bit right now about how grateful I am to be where we are, doing what we are doing.

I had the opportunity to work behind the desk from open to close today.  And even though I've eaten a sum total of 3 bites of sushi and a venti peppermint mocha in those 13 hours, I couldn't be happier.

My staff is incredible. They are talented and passionate and always eager and willing to lend a helping hand in times of need.  They genuinely care for their guests and the experience they're providing and they always always ALWAYS show up with a positive attitude.  Even if things are hard at home.  Even if things are hard at work (we have some pretty high expectations and challenges for these rock stars).  Even if things are hard in our economic and political and social climate.

They.

Show.

Up.

And because we're getting busier and busier every day (I have about 3 opens spot for ANY appointments for the rest of the week!), we need to hire even more incredible humans to provide the kind of elevated and exceptional service the Pittsburgh community wants and needs.  A few simple posts on social media and other job sites today and I have 3 interviews tomorrow and an inbox full of others wanting to work here.

That's the dream Hilary and I had when we created this space.  We dreamt of a place where team members thoroughly enjoyed coming to work.  We dreamt of a place that had a waiting list to join the staff.  We dreamt of a place that we had to duplicate in a short amount of time because of the demand and talented staff filling their books quicker than these four walls could accommodate.

That dream is becoming a reality so much faster than we ever anticipated. Through the smallest amount of luck and the most amount of work and sweat and effort and unwavering allegiance to our standards of excellence, we're close Pittsburgh.  We're close to actualizing that dream.  We're standing on the edge of something incredible.

Did you know...?

Did you know....

...when you schedule 3 services (mani, pedi, hair service, wax etc), or are coming in for your Natural Beaded Row Extension installation, we treat you to lunch or dinner of your choice from any downtown restaurant!

...Starbucks doesn't only happen on Saturdays!  If you schedule any service at 8am throughout the week, we treat you to your favorite creation as a reward for getting up so early!

...very soon we will be offering FULL BODY WAXING!!  We are currently able to do full face and underarms.  Keep an eye out for additions to our menu soon!

...we offer a 12% discount on any and all services when you live OR work in the 15222 zip code for the first year we're open.  So if you're our neighbor and are still thinking about giving us a try, call soon!

...if you are one of our beloved guests, bang trims and gel soak-offs with our polish are ALWAYS FREE!

...for every 3 people you refer, we give you 20% off your next entire service!

...for the month of August, if you work in the animal health care industry or are going to school to be in the veterinary field, you receive 20% off all of your services!

If you didn't know these things...now you do!  Happy Monday everyone, we hope it's a beautiful one.

Self-Care - the Mermaid Edition

We've all heard this term "self-care" thrown about in magazines and on day-time TV.  But how often do we practice it?  How often do we look ourselves in the mirror and say "You deserve to be happy.  You deserve to be taken care of.  You work really hard and should be rewarded."?  Not often enough in my opinion.  Our culture operates on the number of hours you clock, accounts you secure, and how exhausted you are at the end of the week.  And hard work is necessary, don't get me wrong.  But without reward, without seeing the growth from all that struggle - what's the point?

Friday night, Hilary installed 22 inches of custom-colored extensions.  And it was the most amount of money I had spent on myself in....years.  I could afford it.  I didn't have to take out a loan or open a credit card, but it was no small amount.  However - I have never felt better about myself.  I have wanted hair this long and healthy and with the perfect color as long as I can remember.  My natural hair is long by most standards, but it was never going to get as long as I wanted it to be.  I put off getting my hair cut or highlighted longer than I should because I'm "too busy" or feel like the money I would spend could be better spent elsewhere.  I. OWN. A. SALON.  Those thoughts are ridiculous - but I still had them.  I didn't feel like I deserved to sit down in the styling chair and look like my best self.

Then Hilary went and found this incredible method that's not only great for your hair, it's quality and thoughtfully done. The hair is the best that's out there.  The process in painless and seamless (and invisible even on the windiest days!) and I have never, ever, ever felt better about myself.  My skin looks clearer, my body feels thinner, I feel more confident and sexy and powerful.  I feel like my best self.  And I would have opened that credit card for it.  I would have taken out a small loan (that's so not necessary).  Because what Hilary was able to do for me and my hair is priceless.

Check out her IG (@hilaryballardhair), check out DKWStyling and Natural Beaded Row Extensions.  Ask any one of the half a dozen employees here who say its changed their life.  Ask the countless number of guests who say they have tried every method under the sun and until they saw Hilary or Laura, their hair life was a grim one.  Photos and videos are great, but if you want personal testimony, you won't have to look long.

-Veronica, new mermaid to the scene.

Keep Going, Keep Growing

Happy Monday Pittsburgh!

I hope you've all had a lovely weekend, full of friends and anticipated events, concerts and cookouts.

We celebrated Josie (@josierosehair) yesterday as she turned 21!  Our tribe has become just that, a team and family, all excited to see each other grow and become even more successful and specialized day by day.  Josie is near her graduation date - just around a month to go before she exits the Twelve27 Academy and enters the world as a full-fledged stylist.  Big things ahead for this girl and if you haven't checked her out yet, you should.

It's an incredible thing to watch women continue to work on their careers and their skills.  We often compare what we do here at Twelve27 to that of a teaching hospital.  If you've been in our chairs, you've probably experienced one or several women standing close by, observing, asking questions, assisting and trying their hand at some of the non-technical portions of the service.  It's the only way to get better, and that's what we're all about here: getting better every day.

Hilary has begun the process of interviewing for her next personal protege as Kelsey (@_hairbykp_) transitions to her second phase of her program.  So if you're reading this and are interested...send us a message!  If you're a guest of Twelve27 and Hilary's, be on the lookout for a new member of the tribe.  We're pretty picky, so you'll know the next new person you meet will be kind of incredible...

New Year, New You, New US!

As the snow falls heavy on the city, and the temperatures cannot decide where they want to settle - I hope you are all feeling whole, and warm, and healthy as we begin this new and exciting year.

We cannot (nor will not ever) be able to fully express our gratitude for you.  YOU, our clients, our friends, our team, and our city for the greatness we have experienced over the last ten weeks.

Our team has grown and expanded both in numbers and skills.  This group of lady bosses inspire us to be better. Every. Damn. Day.  We show up because they show up.  We set goals for the salon because they are setting goals for themselves.

So, for now, let me say thank you.  We are so excited to take this journey with you.
